Scribit.pro believes in a future in which companies, organizations and governments are committed to being accessible to all, both in the physical and digital world. Driven by the global implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, inclusive thinking and entrepreneurship will be the norm. In this context, scribit.pro focuses on making online videos accessible. Our software makes it possible to create all accessibility files needed to fully comply with relevant laws and regulations in a simple, easy-to-use way. This includes subtitles for people with a hearing impairment and audio description for people with a visual impairment. However, these aids are not limited to people with disabilities. They also benefit people who for any other reason need support to be able to view online videos.
How it all started
In 2018, the Bartiméus Fund launched scribit.tv. Scribit makes YouTube videos accessible for people with a visual impairment by adding audio description. These audio descriptions (descriptions of what is visible on screen) are made by volunteers throughout the country. A completely new idea and a platform that is unique in the world! A wealth of information and entertainment is now being made accessible for people with a visual impairment. Scribit stands for laughing along, crying along, joining the discussion, and participation!
Since its launch, a lot of work has been done to develop and expand the platform and community. For example, in 2019, the scribit app was created to make it possible to view videos with audio description on a smartphone or tablet.
And now, in 2020, we have taken a new step: scribit.pro. By signing the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the Netherlands has entered into an obligation to provide online video content in a way that is accessible to all. As of 23 September 2020, a legal obligation is in force that requires ‘digital accessibility’. This means that all government and government-related websites must implement accessibility standards from this date. The obligation to be digitally accessible applies to all government agencies, including state, regional and local government agencies, public bodies, and associations between government agencies and/or public bodies.
This is why Eveline Ferwerda, creator of scribit.tv, started developing scribit for corporate and government websites. Scribit.pro, the sister company of scribit.tv, enables organizations to enhance their videos with audio description, subtitles, and a text version of the video. They can enhance their videos themselves, in a simple, easy-to-use way, or have this work carried out by the scribit.pro professionals. After all, the future is accessible!
