We watch videos every day: at work, on the go, or at home. For most people, this is effortless. But just imagine that you cannot hear the sound, or that you are missing the visuals. What remains of the story then? For many people, this is daily reality. An accessible video offers a solution, but it is important to understand how that works and what is needed to truly reach everyone.
Video is not always self-evident
Image and sound tell a story together. As soon as one element is missing, you realize just how dependent we are on this combination. Without sound, you miss not only the spoken text but also the tone and emotion behind the message. Without visuals, you lose the context: who is speaking, what is happening, and where are you actually? Even when everything is present, an unclear structure can cause the message to be lost.
Is the message getting across?
Accessibility affects far more people than is often thought: someone with hearing or vision impairment, someone who speaks a different language, someone who struggles to process information, or someone watching a video on a crowded train. Different circumstances, the same question: is the message getting across?
Awareness as the first step
At Scribit.Pro We view accessibility not as an obligation, but as a way to engage with video more consciously. It starts with one question: can everyone understand this video in the same way as I do? By experiencing for yourself what happens when image, sound, or context are missing, you watch more critically and carefully. You start thinking about what is essential and how that becomes visible and audible to everyone.
A small exercise
Watch the videos below. Pay attention to what you can and cannot perceive. What information are you missing? This is the first step towards accessible videos and the beginning of a different way of looking and making. Please note: the example fragment is only available in Dutch.
